I have officially submitted my primaries, taken my CASPER & PREVIEW, and finished my first two secondaries! Again, I am content. I just got back from Fort Lauderdale, FL, so I feel like I am refreshed and ready to continue working. I also have been reading a lot this summer, as I’m not working so I can focus on volunteering and my applications. Some of the most recent books I’ve read are The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, and Tell Me Lies by Carola Lovering. The one I plan to read next is Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, which I’ve actually started before but never finished — not because it wasn’t good, but for some reason I just stopped. The sharp increase in reading has really been good for me, I’d say. It increases my attention span, which is something I really needed to work on, and it also gets me off Tiktok and Instagram. If you’ve taken a long break from reading, I’d honestly recommend getting back into it, as it’s nice to immerse yourself in a different world while also departing from tiktok brain rot. It’s also quite cool to participate in conversations about your favorite book, the most recent thing you’ve read, and the icebreakers oddly focused on summer reading habits as opposed to something like, I don’t know, ice cream flavors. Overall, I like reading. I’d definitely also appreciate some recommendations; I LOVE plot twists, psychological thrillers, and POV books. I’m not the hugest romance book fan, but I can get into one as long as it pulls me in.
I have yet to have a secondary question about books, though I have heard that they can be quite common. If I’m being honest, I can’t tell if the increase is partially because I was nervous that I’d get asked that and wouldn’t be able to honestly answer, but I don’t think so. If that was the case, I’d likely read one and then stop. It is interesting to look at how applications make you look at your current habits, experiences, and talking points, though. You don’t want to run out of stories, you are afraid you don’t have enough answers, you don’t want to reuse something you used in your personal statement. Fortunately, when a response to a question prompt hits you, all of that leaves. You feel comfortable and confident typing, all previous insecurities and second thoughts gone.
That’s at least how it’s been for me. It may take me minutes, hours, even days to come up with an answer, but once it hits, it’s there. It’ll even come in the middle of the night, so I make sure to immediately write it in my notes app because just as quick as it comes, it can go. On that note, stay organized. Whether that means putting secondary “due dates” in your calendar, making an excel sheet for tracking your application timeline (I’ll link the one I use below), or having a whiteboard dedicated to this cycle, make sure you do what you need to stay on top of everything. I think that’s all the advice I have on that subject, because this varies person to person. Overall, read books, make a calendar, and write down your ideas before God gives them to Prince. You can take the girl away from Tiktok but can’t take Tiktok out of the girl.
